Quorum sensing


Cell–cell communication that allows bacteria to share information about cell density and adjust gene expression accordingly. Bacteria monitor their population densities through the production and sensing of small signal molecules called autoinducers, a process entitled as quorum sensing (QS). This process enables bacteria to express energetically expensive processes as a collective only when the impact of those processes on the environment or on a host gets maximized. A possible novel target is the bacterial communication system.
Disruption of QS, bacterial cell-to- cell communication by means of small signal molecules has been suggested as a new anti-infective strategy for aquaculture. QS regulates gene expression, controls a wide variety of prokaryotic phenotypes including enzyme secretion, virulence factor production, bioluminescence and biofilm development. Our specific targeted phytochemicals interfere with AI-2 based QS by decreasing the ability of LuxR to bind to its target promoter sequence and inhibit biofilm formation and reduce virulence. Active principle used in formulation has been proven potentially useful antipathogenic lead compounds for treatment of vibriosis.
