NANODROP, Potentiated Silver Nanoparticle with Titanium Nanoparticle for viral and bacteria control from pond water
Highlights:
Silver and titanium nanoparticles have demonstrated strong antimicrobial properties, making them valuable as water sanitizers in aquaculture to control bacteria and viruses in pond water. These nanoparticles are effective at low concentrations and are known for their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, which can help manage pathogens and improve water quality in aquaculture systems.
Silver nanoparticles exhibit strong antimicrobial properties against a wide range of bacteria (e.g., Vibrio spp., Aeromonas spp.) and viruses. AgNPs work by disrupting bacterial cell walls, entering cells, and interfering with microbial DNA and enzyme function, leading to cell death. They are also effective at neutralizing viral particles. Silver nanoparticles are known to inhibit biofilm formation, which is common in aquaculture systems and can harbor pathogens. By preventing biofilms, AgNPs reduce microbial reservoirs that can contribute to recurring infections. AgNPs gradually release silver ions, providing sustained antimicrobial activity over time. This slow-release property helps maintain pathogen control with lower frequency of dosing. AgNPs can effectively control pathogens without causing harm to aquatic species.
Titanium dioxide nanoparticles act as a photocatalyst under ultraviolet (UV) or sunlight exposure, producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radicals. These ROS attack and destroy microbial cells, including bacteria and viruses, through oxidative stress. TiO₂ can also oxidize organic matter in pond water, helping reduce waste buildup, which can otherwise promote pathogen growth. This improves overall water quality and reduces nutrient availability for harmful bacteria. TiO₂ requires UV light to activate its antimicrobial effect, so ponds exposed to natural sunlight are well-suited for this application. This makes TiO₂ an effective option for open pond systems.
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are increasingly recognized in aquaculture for their potential to control pathogens associated with both White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and White Fecal Disease (WFD), particularly those caused by Vibrio species. Their powerful antimicrobial properties allow them to target both viral particles and bacteria, which can improve pond water quality and reduce disease incidence. Silver nanoparticles provide a promising approach for managing WSSV and Vibrio-related White Fecal Disease in shrimp aquaculture.
Remove White Spot Virus as well as White fecal disease of the pond water.
